Hickory is the heaviest of American hardwoods. Can be difficult to machine and require much work when using hand tools so additional care is required. Holds nails and screws well but pre-boring is often required. Can be sanded to a good finish. Grain pattern welcomes a full range of medium to dark images. Cut hickory can be difficult to dry and often has high shrinkage resulting in a low yield making it a premium wood. Well known for its strength and excellent stem bending properties. Very tough wood. Used in tool handles, furniture, flooring, sporting goods, wooden ladders and paneling.
